5 Best Slab Table Designs

So slab tables have had a huge surge in popularity in the last 10 years.

While some styles are arguably a fad that will succumb to the same fate as your Mother’s high waisted jeans, some designs are timeless and will be passed on from generation to generation for many years to come.

This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list, its just my humble opinion on the top 5 tables I think really nailed it in terms of execution, design and style.

1. Four Eyes Slab Table

Slab table with black epoxy resin filling in voids made in mid century modern style.

Ok, ok……. I know it’s not the most eye popping build, but I think this table is one that fits into a variety of different styled homes. It has the classic design elements of tapered round legs, aprons and has some really nice brass details that really give this piece a refined, finished look. The black epoxy isn’t overbearing and rather than try to call attention to itself it fills the table, adding beauty and strength where it was needed.

Slab table, modern style with finished edges
Not all slab table are live edge, this finished edge detail works very nicely with the elegent design of the legs and the overall feel of the piece.

I know what you guys are thinking by now.

What!? Hello, These aren’t even slab tables!
Where is the live edge?

Its not a slab table unless it is live edge and at least 2.5 in thick.

So I have to come clean, while I do like the look of some live edge tables, there is a part of me that just cant really get fully behind the idea that you just cut off the ends, clean of the live edge and thats it.

Before you jump on me I know there is a ton of work that goes into making them I’m not trying to put anyone down, I’m simple stating that I think you can cut and finish the live edge off of a slab, add some nice legs and its still a slab table, all-bight not what may come to mind immediately for some people when they think of one.

3. Blacktail Studio Signature Table

You cant talk about slab tables without bringing up Cam at Blacktail studio and rightly so. I have watch more than one of his builds and I really like the edge details he adds and the custom bases he has fabricated for his tables. Not to mention it seams like he has quite a bit more patience than I do when it comess to sanding and finishing.

Beautiful table and excellent craftsman.

4. Red and Black – Charred Desk

This is another uniquer build from Blacktail Studio, this time using burned abd charred areas of the wood to highlight the character of the redwood.

5. Luthier Slab Table

What makes this slab table is not so much the design of the shape but the care and unique finishing technique that really makes the grain come out. From the name you can gatgher that the finsihing technique resembles what a guitar maker would do when finishing a highly polished electric guitar body, instead of stain Luthiers use dyes, using these they can control the gradient and the contrast.
